Welcome To C/S/E/L

C/S/E/L is the oldest cognitive engineering university laboratory. Since 1982, we have developed knowledge, methods, and tools to guide the design of systems to support human performance in complex settings. In supporting human performance, we are concerned with cognitive functions such as problem solving, decision making, attention, perception, and memory.

As researchers and designers, we identify patterns and leverage new technologies to support dynamic decision making in the face of anomalies, uncertainty, stress, and sometimes intentional deception by adversaries. Cognitive Engineering provides the integrative perspective linking technology and cognitive science with people embedded in fields of practice. We take a highly interdisciplinary approach integrating computer graphics, multimedia, artificial intelligence, and other technology provides the power for new systems.

Technological powers create possibilities, and Cognitive Engineering can change these putative benefits into effectiveness by grounding technology in the complexities of real worlds of practice. The goal of the lab is to contribute both to science by focusing on models of human performance in the design and interaction with cognitive tools, and contribute to engineering by dealing with the actual design and development of such tools to support cognitive work at the intersection of people, technology, and work.
